  1. Tropical seabird of the genus Sula, in the
  2. same family, Sulidae, as the northern gannet.
  3. There are six species, including the
  4. circumtropical brown booby Sula leucogaster.
  5. They inhabit coastal waters, and dive to
  6. catch fish. Their name was given to them by
  7. sailors who saw their tameness as stupidity.
  8. One species, Abbott's booby, breeds only on
  9. Christmas Island, in the western Indian
  10. Ocean. Unlike most boobies and gannets it
  11. nests high up in trees. Large parts of its
  12. breeding ground have been destroyed by
  13. phosphate mining, but conservation measures
  14. now protect the site.
